Foursquare is a location-based social networking website, software for use on mobile devices. Users “check-in” at venues using a mobile website, text messaging or a device-specific application. Foursquare gives you and your friends new ways of exploring your city. Incentives include earning points and unlocking badges for discovering new things.
Points are awarded for “checking in” at venues. Users can choose to have their check-ins posted on their accounts on Twitter, Facebook or both. Users can create a “To Do” list for their private use and add “Tips” to venues that other users can read, which serve as suggestions for great things to do, see or eat at the location. The social part of the service is in the ability to add Foursquare friends, who you can compete with for points in a weekly challenge. You can also play against other users in your main location.
As a business owner, you can use foursquare to engage your increasingly mobile customers with foursquare “specials,” which are discounts and prizes you can offer your loyal customers when they check in on foursquare at your venue. Additionally, if you offer foursquare specials to your customers, you will be able to track how your venue is performing over time.
